Now, when the 4th-generation Paperwhite is on the way, many users consider upgrading their old Kindles to the newest, shiny, waterproof, and Audible-ready e-reader.

And many users immediately add to cart the original Amazon case cover. When the new Kindle arrives, the protection the cover gives is there as well.
There are, however, three disadvantages of original case covers:
- they are more expensive than third-party alternatives,
- they usually don’t offer extra features,
- they are not unique.
The original Kindle case usually costs between $30 and $40. It’s twice or three times more expensive than third-party cases that offer similar features. You can find a great-looking case from Fintie or MoKo for around $15 or even under $10.
Secondly, when it comes to features, the more options you have, the better. Original cases for Kindle have a unified book-style design, with a plastic back shell and the front from different materials and in various colors.
Some features are missing in original Amazon cases. For instance, the Kindle Paperwhite 4 cover does not have a built-in stand which is particularly handy if you wanted to read the book hands-free.
The last problem is the Ford T problem. Henry Ford said in 1909 about color options for the new model: “You can have the car painted in any color so long as it is black.”
Obviously, original Amazon Kindle cases are painted in more than one color. There are eight color options for the 4th-gen Kindle Paperwhite, including the bright ones borrowed from Amazon Fire, such as Canary Yellow and Punch Red.
However, compared to thousands of colors, patterns, and designs offered by third-party producers, the choice is terribly limited. If you want to give your Kindle a touch of your personality, you would never choose the original case.
The 2018 Kindle Paperwhite was released together with three kinds of original Amazon covers:
- premium leather cover – crafted from premium leather featuring a ruggedly smooth finish. Price: $59.99,
- textured leather cover – they are made from natural leather, and available in four colors: Black, Cobalt Purple, Merlot, and Punch Red. Price: $39.99,
- water-safe fabric – three color variants resemble the color code of Fire tablets: Canary Yellow, Marine Blue, and Charcoal Black. Price: $29.99.
As you see, these cases are expensive. Out of the three options, the third – and the cheapest one – is worth taking a look. The cases are made from “water-safe” fabric which can handle a brief exposure to water. It’s something you can’t say about leather cases.
On the other hand, any case that is made of a combination of plastic, faux leather, and microfiber is water-safe. After drying, there shouldn’t be any shape deformations or other signs of contact with clear water.
If you have decided to buy a third-party case for your new Kindle Paperwhite, you’ll need to wait at least a few weeks. The Paperwhite 4 is by 1-2 mm smaller than its predecessor. All cases that were developed for Kindle Paperwhite 1, 2, and 3, won’t fit.
Case producers have to develop and produce new covers that would fit the new model. We should see new cases by the end of November, so you’ll be able to buy them together with the new Kindle Paperwhite during Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2018.
