Kindle Unlimited deal on Prime Day 2023 – 3 months free of charge / Screenshot: Amazon

The deal lets you save $36 on Amazon’s popular digital subscription that includes ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines.

Amazon’s major Prime Day 2023 event is on July 11 and 12, but some deals are already active. Among them, you will find a deal on Kindle Unlimited digital subscription.

The deal lets you get 3 months of the subscription for free. The regular monthly fee is set at $11.99, so you will save $35.97.

The Kindle Unlimited deal can be reached right from the Prime Day 2023 front page. Just look for the widget saying “3 months free of Kindle Unlimited”.

Please note, that the terms of the deal may vary. It depends on the history of Kindle Unlimited with your Amazon account.

If you have subscribed to the membership before – and especially if you have been a member several times – the offer tailored just for you may not be as attractive.

Despite the fact that some Amazon devices are already discounted by even 55%, the prices of Kindle models are still not reduced. I am especially waiting to see a price drop on the Kindle Scribe.

Before you subscribe or resubscribe to Kindle Unlimited, make sure to check out the current catalog of eligible titles.

As you may already know, KU is being currently affected by hundreds of books that were generated by artificial intelligence, and their publishers don’t disclose this fact. Here is a quick guide on how to spot AI-generated books in Kindle Unlimited.

How to spot AI-generated Kindle Unlimited ebooks https://ebookfriendly.com/how-to-spot-ai-generated-kindle-unlimited-ebooks/ https://ebookfriendly.com/how-to-spot-ai-generated-kindle-unlimited-ebooks/#comments Tue, 04 Jul 2023 12:27:23 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=157521 AI-generated books may seriously harm the publishing industry, and digital subscriptions are prone to be hit the hardest.

There is a growing list of books published with the help of artificial intelligence.

Everyone knows the story of Ammaar Reshi, a product manager for a Silicon Valley fintech company, who used ChatGPT and Midjourney to create a children’s book Alice and Sparkle

Since August 2022, a Canadian artist Tim Boucher published almost 100 books that were co-created by AI. Boucher says he needs between 6 and 8 hours to create and publish each of his books. Imagine, a single author capable of publishing hundreds of books a year.

Obviously, ChatGPT takes credits for most of what happens in the publishing industry right now.

Currently, there are already almost 1,000 ebooks in the Kindle Store that are co-authored by AI. Specifically, ChatGPT is listed as one of their authors. These books were created by authors responsible enough to admit they use ChatGPT.

And now we come to the essence of the big problem that’s flooding Kindle Unlimited: lots of newly published books were generated by AI, and you don’t even know about it.

What’s even worse, many of these books made it to the top 100 Kindle bestseller lists. It was first discovered by an indie author Caitlyn Lynch on Twitter (here is a cover story on the Vice):

💬 Take a look at the Best Sellers in Teen & Young Adult Contemporary Romance eBooks top 100 chart. I can see 19 actual legit books. The rest are AI nonsense clearly there to click farm.

How is that possible? It’s directly connected with how digital subscriptions work. As you can download any book at no extra cost, you do it instantly without checking out its content.

And when you open the book on your e-reader or in a book reading app, you just need to read roughly the length of the free sample to make this book considered as read.

The story about nonsense AI Kindle Unlimited books broke at the end of June 2023, and most of these titles are not on the main Kindle bestseller lists anymore. However, they are still on the top 100 lists for subcategories. Luckily, these books have several things in common, and I will discuss them below.

How to spot AI-generated Kindle Unlimited ebooks

The titles are usually written in capital letters

How to spot AI generated Kindle Unlimited books - titles in capital letters
How to spot AI-generated Kindle Unlimited books – titles are written in capital letters

It may obviously change over time, as the creators of these books with try to adapt. But today, most of these AI books come with titles written in CAPITAL LETTERS.

I am not talking about the title that appears on the cover art, but the title that’s a part of the product page description on Amazon.

Here is a screenshot of the Top 100 Kindle bestsellers in the Teen & Young Adult category

Authors have Asian names

How to spot AI generated Kindle Unlimited books - Asian authors
How to spot AI-generated Kindle Unlimited books – the books are published by authors with Asian names

If you spot a book that is published by someone called Lam Dich Quan, Phung Linh Vang or Phuong Tuong, it strongly suggests that its content was generated by AI.

Here is the same screenshot with the highlighted names.

Book covers are made from a template

How to spot AI generated Kindle Unlimited books - the same cover art
How to spot AI-generated Kindle Unlimited books – the same cover art

If you browse Kindle bestsellers lists or search results pages, and notice books with the same cover artwork and different titles, the chances are big these books are AI generated.

Obviously, there are many books that use the same cover artwork, naming only the books from the same series, or free Kindle books that are available in the Kindle Store.

However, compared to book series, the same cover art is used not for a few titles but dozens of them.

Again, let’s have a look at the Top 100 Kindle bestsellers in the Teen & Young Adult catgory.

Same cover art but different authors

If you re still not sure whether the KU book was AI-generated or not, you can compare cover art. If the books with the same cover art template are published by different Asian authors, these books are AI-generated (see the screenshot above).

Books are under 100 pages

How to spot AI generated Kindle Unlimited books - under 100 pages
How to spot AI-generated Kindle Unlimited books – they are under 100 pages

I have run through the entire list of Top 100 Kindle bestsellers in the Teen & Young Adult catgory, to spot the AI titles. Then I opened them their product detail pages.

Out of 24 titles in the Top 100 Teen & Young Adult bestsellers that I considered to be AI generated:

▸ Only one title had a print length longer that 100 (FREE MUSIC by Lam Dich Chinh), with 118 pages).
▸ 13 books were shorter than 50 pages.

Why are these books short? It’s not only about the ease of generating the content. In the case of the digital subscription it’s also about meeting conditions of the read title. The shorter the book, the biggers the chances to get the reader swipe past the required length.

Published in 2023, no publisher

The final place to find out, if the book was generated by AI or not is the “Product details” section.

None of the books I have tested included the “Publisher” field in the Product details” section.

If all the conditions listed above were met, and if the book was published in 2023 or later, you can be sure is was not written by a human but by an AI tool.

The best Kindle Unlimited books in 2023, according to Amazon editors https://ebookfriendly.com/best-kindle-unlimited-books-2023-amazon-editors/ https://ebookfriendly.com/best-kindle-unlimited-books-2023-amazon-editors/#respond Wed, 25 Jan 2023 08:15:46 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=157298 Amazon editors recommend the best new books you can read for free with your Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Are you still a Kindle Unlimited member or plan to reactivate the subscription?

Kindle Unlimited is only as good as the books that you can read. There are now over 3 million eligible titles, including books with Audible narration, magazines, short stories and comics.

You still can’t read bestselling new books from the Big 5 publishers. However, it’s worth noting that Kindle Unlimited books dominate Top 100 Kindle bestseller lists. Even 80% of the top sellers are eligible to read for free with your KU subscription.

What are the best books you can access and read within your Kindle Unlimited? Amazon editors may direct you to multiple interesting titles.

About Amazon blog has recently released a list of the best new books available to Kindle Unlimited members

Curated by an Amazon editor, Sarah Elison, the list includes books from popular categories: mystery, romance, and woman’s fiction.

Kindle Unlimited helps voracious readers, casual book lovers, and new-to-reading customers discover incredible books across every genre – with new titles added every month.

From bestselling author Kendra Elliot comes Bone Deep, a riveting mystery in the Widow’s Island Novella series. The story follows an ex–FBI agent’s race to save the man she loves from a trio of bank robbers.

Keeper of Enchanted Rooms by Charlie N. Holmberg is a romance about Merritt Fernsby, an author who inherits a house that is said to be haunted. He is initially scared of the house but eventually becomes close to Hulda, the woman who is hired to help him with the house.

If you are into women’s fiction, you should check out The Vibrant Years by Sonali Dev. It’s a story about a 65-year-old woman who inherits a million dollars and uses it to buy a condo in a Florida retirement community. This change has a ripple effect on her daughter-in-law Aly, who is encouraged to fight for a segment at the news station she works at.

Kindle Unlimited free offers are now displayed in search results for Kindle https://ebookfriendly.com/kindle-unlimited-free-offers-search-results-amazon/ https://ebookfriendly.com/kindle-unlimited-free-offers-search-results-amazon/#respond Wed, 25 Jan 2023 07:27:54 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=157288
Kindle Unlimited free bundle offers are now displayed on Amazon search pages / Screenshot: Amazon

You can now see the details of Kindle Unlimited bundle plans without visiting product pages of Kindle models.

The free Kindle Unlimited plan was offered for the first time with the 4th-generation Kindle Paperwhite back in 2018. When buying an e-reader, you could add a 6-month Kindle Unlimited plan – and it costed you nothing.

Since that time, free Kindle Unlimited plans were offered for every newly launched Kindle model, but the offers have not been that attractive. Usually, the 3 or 4-month plans were bundled, depending on the Kindle model.

If you are an avid reader, and consider reactivating Kindle Unlimited, getting it bundled with the e-reader is the best deal you can get.

With the regular price of Kindle Unlimited subscription set at $9.99 per month, your savings were between $30 and $40 with a purchase of a Kindle model.

It’s worth noting that occasionally the free Kindle Unlimited bundles may not be available for certain models.

From now on, you can see Kindle Unlimited offers for Kindle without visiting product pages for each model.

If you use the Amazon search box for “Kindle,” you will see the details of the Kindle Unlimited free plan under every Kindle model listed. Just check it out for yourself.

Please have in mind that if you purchase a Kindle model with a free Kindle Unlimited plan, you will enjoy it free of charge for a given time, but the next day you will be charged with the monthly fee.

To avoid it, you can cancel Kindle Unlimited subscription the same day you redeem the offer.

How good is Kindle Unlimited today? The number of books (millions) is not a good reference point. You should check out the catalog of Kindle Unlimited eligible books to see how many books you would actually like to read.

If you would like to get a standalone Kindle Unlimited deal, you can currently pick up the 2-month subscription for $4.99 instead of $19.98.

16 gift ideas for the Kindle lover in your life https://ebookfriendly.com/best-gift-ideas-kindle-owners/ https://ebookfriendly.com/best-gift-ideas-kindle-owners/#comments Mon, 13 Dec 2021 15:44:00 +0000 http://ebookfriendly.com/?p=117898 Kindle t-shirts and other apparel, ebook subscriptions, gift cards, or literary jewelry are among the gifts you can give someone who reads ebooks using a Kindle e-reader or app.

Are there Kindle lovers in your family? You can always gift them the newest Kindle. However, gifting a new Kindle every year proves you’ve run out of gift ideas. There are more ideas at hand than you think.

If you want to give a gift to your beloved one or a family member who already owns the Kindle e-reader, you actually have more options to explore than when thinking about bookish gifts in general.

An obvious online destination to browse for Kindle-related products is an Amazon online store. You may wonder what specific items to buy. Millions of products are offered here, and it’s easy to get lost, especially if you don’t know what you are looking for.

Two specific areas that relate specifically to Kindle owners are: special services that are connected with the Kindle ecosystem, and benefits specific to paper books that a Kindle user might miss.

Most importantly, in looking for Kindle related gifts, you don’t have to limit yourself to Amazon. Sure, you will have to register an account at another service, but sometimes it’s worth the effort. There are two online stores that are particularly interesting when it comes to gift giving:

Etsy – this is the biggest online store with handmade goods. The selection of bookish gifts is impressive, so Etsy is a must-see destination, especially if you want to gift something unique in style. As all items are made to order, there are several ways to add a personal message – also for the bookish items listed below.

Redbubble – a marketplace for custom designed items, including prints, stationery, cases & covers, t-shirts & other apparel, and – most importantly – home decor items. Over 750 thousand artists sell their artwork on Redbubble, and you will surely find here the topic and style you love the most. Opposite to other merch sites, such as CafePress, the designs are much better.

In the list below, you’ll find both the digital gifts, perfect for someone who consumes digital content, and real gifts that try to fill the gap between reading print and electronic books.

Gifts for Kindle users – highlights

Kindle lover gift guide

In the following list, you will find ideas for:

  • “I love my Kindle” t-shirt and other fashion items
  • A personalized case or sleeve
  • Book-themed home decor
  • Kindle Unlimited subscription
  • An Amazon gift card
  • An all-in-one innovative bedside lamp
  • A digital bundle of popular book series
  • A screen protector
  • A Bluetooth-enabled speaker or wearable
  • An Audible gift membership
  • Jewelry that looks like miniature books
  • Apparel with book cover art

Best gifts for Kindle owners

1. “I love my Kindle” t-shirt

Print books or ebooks? You are not forced to choose. In fact, a majority of book lovers, who started reading on their Kindles and other devices, have found a perfect balance between the print and electronic format.

“I love my Kindle” statement doesn’t mean that you have stopped reading paper books. And it’s reflected in the artwork designed by our team member, Piotr Kowalczyk. This vintage-style design features the text:

I love my Kindle just as much as I love my print books.

Behind the typography, you will notice an engraved shape of an e-reader. Don’t worry, it doesn’t show a specific model, so it will be suitable for an owner of any Kindle.

“I love my Kindle” artwork is available on Redbubble in two colors (light and dark) on over 70 items, from t-shirts and apparel of all kinds (including caps and long sleeves), to mugs, throw pillows, bags, masks, and impressive wall art.

2. Personalized Kindle case or sleeve

Personalized Kindle sleeve - best gifts
Personalized Kindle sleeve by Modern Tally / Image: Etsy

Many people who decide to buy the Kindle, almost automatically add to the cart the original Kindle case from Amazon. It’s available in a few colors, so you have the feeling you have freedom of choice.

Case covers are the kind of the gift Kindle owners will be more than happy to receive. Covers usually get damaged faster than the Kindle they protect, so exchanging the cover for the same Kindle model is something more and more users do.

The only thing you should do is check out which cover the giftee currently owns – and try to buy a different one: by color, design, and functionality.

Let us give you advice: don’t buy the cover that first comes on a list of search results. Try to find something unique, something that would express the personality of a person you are going to give a gift.

One way is to explore cases available in several insanely colorful and fashionable color versions. Our favorite brands are Fintie and MoKo. Both of them you can find on Amazon.

You can also check out Caseable. The site offers hundreds of original designs for Kindle. Most importantly, you can personalize the artwork by adding text and changing colors – or design the cover from scratch by adding your photo.

Another option is to go for a handmade accessory, made to order. There are many gorgeous Kindle cases and sleeves available on Etsy. Many shop owners offer the option to add a text or adjust the design to specific needs of the person who orders it.

3. Book-shaped home decor

A modern book lover stores all ebooks on a single Kindle e-reader. On one side, it’s extremely convenient, but here is the question: how to express the love for books?

It’s good to have something at home that reminds of the evening one can spend with the book and a cup of delicious coffee or tea.

Sometimes, a little home decor that resembles a good old book will make the gift recipient happier than another Amazon gift card or a boring case cover.

And you will be surprised how many great-looking, creative products you can find. You’ll even want one for yourself!

4. Kindle Unlimited subscription

Kindle Unlimited subscription - best gifts for Kindle fans
Kindle Unlimited free plan is available with most Kindle models / Image: Geek Updated

If someone is using the Kindle heavily, it means she or he is hungry for books. You can always buy them the new release from a favorite author, but here is a better idea: Kindle Unlimited.

Kindle Unlimited ebook subscription gives unlimited access not only to well over a million Kindle ebooks (it’s about one-fourth of the entire Kindle Store), but also thousands of audiobooks. Current issues of popular magazines are also included.

You have most probably heard or tried this digital subscription, and consider it not attractive anymore. However, you can check out how the service is evolving, and why it makes sense to reactivate Kindle Unlimited.

If you decide to gift Kindle Unlimited, you can select one of subscription plans: 6, 12, or 24 months.

It’s worth keeping in mind to know that from time to time you can grab the Kindle Unlimited subscription at a reduced price. Amazon usually offers the deals for Prime Day and Cyber Monday. You can expect the discount is between 20% (6-months plan) and 40% (24-months) for long-term plans, or get a short-term subscription for a symbolic price.

5. Bathtub table and reading stand

Bathtub reading stand - top Kindle gifts

What do lovers of print and electronic books have in common? They most probably love to read in a bathtub.

This most relaxing time of the day can be even better if one takes to the bathroom some more things than just the latest waterproof Kindle.

Multifunctional bathtub tables are getting more and more popular. They can hold an e-reader or a print book, a cup of tea or a glass of wine, a snack, and a few tealight candles.

Most bathtub tables and tablet holders are expandable, so they will fit most tubs.

6. Kindle-branded Amazon gift card

Amazon gift card for Kindle users

Buying a gift card is the safest of all the gift ideas. On the other hand, it may suggest you haven’t spent enough time to buy the relevant gift, so you’ve chosen the most convenient way.

If you don’t know the giftee’s favorite authors, genres or book series, buying the newly released bestseller from the top author might not be a good idea. The only thing you know for sure is that the Kindle user will need money to buy ebooks.

Therefore, you can purchase the gift card, and let the giftee choose the titles.

Amazon gift cards are available in hundreds of designs for almost all occasions. Among them, you can find Kindle-branded artwork. Best of all, you can add your own photo to an e-gift card. Getting a cover of the gift recipient’s favorite novel is a great idea.

How big should be the value of the gift card? Kindle books cost between $0.99 and $12.99. If the giftee likes to read bestselling titles from big-name authors released by big publishers, the $25 gift card will be enough to buy two books.

7. Ebook bundle of a book series or author

Ebook bundles - best Kindle gift ideas

What if you very well know the book preferences of the Kindle user you want to give a gift?

Probably, she or he was reading some book series in a print format. Why not making them happy again by giving a chance to re-read favorite books on their Kindle?

One of the greatest things about ebooks is that many well-known book series can be bought in bundles, as a single ebook file that includes all parts of the series. Therefore, you don’t need to buy particular volumes one by one.

What’s most important, the bundle is cheaper than buying all parts of the series separately.

To find an ebook bundle on Amazon, go to Kindle Store and in a search box type the title of the series, followed by either “collection” or “bundle.”

8. Innovative bedside lamp

Innovative bedside lamp with USB - best gifts for Kindle users

Bedside lamps are no longer about giving you the light when you are reading a book before going to sleep. Especially that Kindle e-readers have a built-in front light.

Bedside lamps have evolved to become multipurpose appliances that meet different needs. They combine a lamp with an alarm clock, a charger, or a Bluetooth speaker.

Many modern-day bedside lamps offer adjustable brightness or an ability to control the warmth of the light. And some of them look like from the future.

The widest choice of innovative bedside lamps can be found on Amazon. For best results don’t explore only “Electronics” category, but make sure to browse “Home & Kitchen” and “Appliances” as well.

9. Bluetooth speaker, headphones, or wearables

Bluetooth headphones - best gifts for Kindle users

Now, when all Kindle models are capable of playing Audible audiobooks, it’s a great idea to gift headphones, earbuds, and portable speakers.

What you have to keep in mind is that Kindle e-readers don’t have a headphone jack. The only way to listen to Kindle audiobooks is via Bluetooth speakers and headphones.

The main advantage of Bluetooth headphones is that they are wireless. You are not limited by cables and irritated by cable mess. You can freely move around the room while the Kindle is lying on the table.

The main disadvantage of Bluetooth headphones is that you need to recharge them. Compared to the Kindle, which runs a few weeks on a single charge, you’ll need to find the power source every even day.

That’s why it’s good to buy a speaker or phones with the longest possible battery life.

10. Audible membership

Audible membership - gifts for Kindle users

Since Audible audiobooks can be seamlessly played on Kindle devices, it’s worth considering Audible as a gift. You can obviously buy a single audiobook, but here is a better idea: get Audible prepaid membership plan.

Audible gift membership can be purchased on Amazon. You can choose from four plans: 1, 3, 6, and 12-month. The 3-month plan is the most popular option. For $45 the member will get 3 full-length audiobooks and 6 Audible Originals.

You can customize the Audible gift before making it ready to give.

You can choose the delivery method (email or print), select the design from gorgeous ready-to-use layouts, and set the email delivery date.

If you choose to gift Audible membership by email, Amazon will send the gift together with easy to follow redemption instructions.

11. Miniature book jewelry

Miniature book jewelry - gifts for Kindle lovers

Book jewelry is a great gift for every woman who loves reading. For Kindle users who may sometimes miss the look of the print book, the jewelry that looks like miniature objects of desire is a clever idea.

The jewelry that includes miniature book charms is available on Etsy, the leading site with handcrafted and vintage goods made to order.

If you prefer shopping on Amazon, you can also find book-themed jewelry here. There is a new sub-store with handcrafted goods called Amazon Handmade.

12. T-shirt with a book cover art

The biggest problem with the Kindle is that nobody knows what you are reading.

One way to express you love books is wearing book jewelry, the other one is getting relevant clothing.

What about gifting a t-shirt that features cover art of the giftee’s favorite book? Out of Print Clothing offers a range of t-shirts, both for women and men. Among the designs, you’ll find The Great Gatsby, The Little Prince, and Animal Farm.

You can buy Out of Print Clothing literary t-shirts directly on Amazon.

13. Travel electronic organizer

Travel organizer for Kindle - best gift ideas

If the gift recipient already owns a Kindle e-reader, you can assume she or he has already bought a case cover.

With a growing number of electronic devices (and a growing need to keep all of them at all times), travel organizers become an important companion of every heavy tech user.

A travel organizer usually features two big compartments: one can fit a small laptop, and the other one can be devoted to store and protect a Kindle.

Plus, there are several smaller pockets for cables, headphones, chargers, adapters, and personal essentials – all cleverly organized in the smallest possible space.

14. Book-scented candle

Book-scented candle - best gift ideas for Kindle lovers

Many people who start reading on the Kindle are astonished with tons of features that make digital reading not only convenient but also enjoyable.

The only thing that’s missing is the addictive scent of an old book.

Kindle users would be more than happy if they could keep the book scent while they read an ebook. Therefore, the gift that does that will be warmly welcomed.

There is a growing number of scented candles that recreate the scent of a book and library. The chemistry behind that? A combination of grassy notes with a tang of acids and a hint of vanilla.

A growing number of book-scented candles can be found on Amazon Handmade.

15. Funny Kindle quote throw pillow

Funny Kindle quote throw pillow - best gifts
Crazy people Kindle quote best gifts

If you are still searching for a gift that specifically describes the giftee’s love for the Kindle, take a look at the cozy artwork that features a funny Kindle-related quote.

Crazy people love their Kindles.

The quote comes from a book by the Irish writer Dermot Davis, “Brain: The Man Who Wrote the Book That Changed the World.” And it’s a perfect description of people’s addiction to reading on the Kindle!

The design artwork is not available on Amazon. You can grab it on Redbubble, one of the most popular online platforms for print-on-demand products based on user artwork.

There are two colors and over 70 items to choose from: t-shirts, caps, mugs, throw pillows, bags, masks, and wall art, among others.

16. Accessory for hands-free reading

Hands-free reading pillow stand for Kindle - gift ideas

For avid book readers, any idea that would make the reading session more convenient is most welcome.

For electronic reading devices, be it e-readers or tablets, buying a case with a built-in stand seems like an obvious idea. However, even for the Kindle, you can hardly find a case that features a built-in vertical stand.

That’s why it makes sense to consider an idea of a stand or pillow that will let the giftee read on a Kindle hands-free.

What kind of hands-free reading accessory are you looking for? Everything depends on where you spend the most time reading. If you usually read in bed, you would need something cozy but stable, a pillow-like stand would be the best.

Here they are.

Many users who consider getting Kindle Unlimited subscription, want to find out how many eligible titles are worth reading.

The easiest way is to explore the catalog of Kindle Unlimited eligible books, but you will see there – besides the titles that are featured by Amazon – only the books that are currently doing well.

Therefore, we recommend that you take a look at the table below. It includes Kindle Unlimited books that made it to the ultimate list of best Kindle books of all time.

You won’t be surprised to find here all three parts of the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. The order should also not surprise you.

On the other hand, the poor performance of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter is quite surprising. All books from the series are available via Kindle Unlimited since the very beginning and are still heavily promoted as the superstars of the service. Despite this, only the first novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, made it to the list of top 100 Kindle books of all time.

Top 15 Kindle Unlimited bestsellers of all time

In a table below, you will see 15 Kindle Unlimited books that landed on the list of Top 100 Kindle books of all time. The list is based on annual bestseller lists from 2007-2017.

Here are the highlights of methodology. Every book on the annual list earns points. The higher the book is ranked, the more points it gets: the book on the yearly list gets 100 points, and the last title gets 1 point.

When is Kindle Unlimited book counted as sold? When the user has read roughly the length of the free sample.

How to read the table:

  • # – a position of the book in Top 100,
  • #/100 – a position of the book on a list of top 100 Kindle books of all time,
  • Title (series) – a title of the book and a name of the series it belongs to,
  • Author – an author or authors of the book,
  • Ratg – rating,
  • Revs – number of reviews,
  • Cat – a primary category the book is ranked in.

Here are the best new books you can download for free to you Kindle if you have an active Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Are you planning to start or reactivate your Kindle Unlimited membership? This popular digital subscription costs $9.99 per month and gives access to well over 1.5 million ebooks, plus comics, magazines, and audiobook companions powered by Audible.

Before making a decision whether to sign up for Kindle Unlimited, make sure to find enough interesting titles to justify the monthly cost of the service.

Obviously, you can check out the default catalog of Kindle Unlimited eligible titles (you can do it on your Kindle or in a Kindle app, too), but the problem is that it’s not easy to find there the new releases the readers actually love. The default “featured” sort option is what Amazon thinks you will like.

The following list of the best new Kindle Unlimited books includes the titles that we have discovered in a few sections across Amazon, from a list of hot new Kindle releases, to Prime Reading additions, to Kindle Exclusives, to Amazon Charts.

The 10th-generation Kindle was introduced in April 2019. The biggest improvement is a front-lighted display. Four LED lamps spread an even light across the display to help you read in the dark without a bedside lamp.

Main benefits of Kindle 10

  • An adjustable front light that makes the text readable in any light conditions.
  • Ability to play Audible audiobooks via connected headphones and speakers.
  • Smoother design, compared to Kindle 9.
  • A display with a bit better contrast.
  • White color!

Kindle Unlimited or Amazon Prime Reading – which service is better for me? https://ebookfriendly.com/kindle-unlimited-vs-amazon-prime-reading-comparison/ https://ebookfriendly.com/kindle-unlimited-vs-amazon-prime-reading-comparison/#comments Fri, 20 Nov 2020 19:09:00 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=132019 In this updated comparison, you will learn about major features, eligible books, compatible devices, offered deals, and cancellation terms.

Amazon offers so many digital services that it’s easy to get lost and confuse their names, features, and prices. Kindle Unlimited, Amazon Prime, FreeTime Unlimited, Prime Video, Audible Channels, Amazon Music Unlimited, Kindle Owners’ Lending Library…

Some of these services are standalone subscriptions; some are a part of complex membership programs. Are you sure you are choosing a service that meets your needs the most?

In this overview, we will compare two popular digital services offered by Amazon: Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading. You will learn about major features, compatible devices, eligible books, cancellation terms, and offered deals.

Let’s start with brief definitions of each service:

Kindle Unlimited is a standalone subscription-based service that gives unlimited access to over 1 million Kindle ebooks, Audible audiobook companions, as well as digital newspapers, magazines, and comic books. The monthly fee is $9.99, and you can try it for 30 days free of charge.

⇢ More about Kindle Unlimited

Amazon Prime Reading is a part of Amazon Prime (multi-benefit subscription that costs $12.99 per month). It gives unlimited access to a rotating selection of about 1,000 hot Kindle ebooks, popular magazines, children’s books, comics, and short reads.

⇢ More about Prime Reading

At the end of the post, you will see most important features compared in a handy table, but before that, let’s compare the features and facts in detail.

Kindle Unlimited vs. Amazon Prime Reading

Subscription comparison

Both Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading are subscription-based services, but there is one substantial difference between them:

  • Kindle Unlimited is a separate subscription service,
  • Prime Reading is a part of a larger subscription – Amazon Prime.

Therefore, comparing these two services one-to-one doesn’t make sense.

Kindle Unlimited costs $9.99 per month, and you get only this very service.

Prime Reading is not the only benefit of Amazon Prime membership. For $12.99 per month, Amazon Prime subscription offers several benefits, including:

  • Free two-day shipping to addresses in the contiguous US
  • Free same-day delivery in certain areas
  • Prime Instant Video – unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows
  • Prime Music – unlimited access to millions of songs and playlists
  • Audible channels – free access to original audio content

As you see, Prime Reading is just one of the benefits you can access – and probably not the most important one. Free two-day shipping and video streaming are the most common reasons to join Prime.

Available titles

Kindle Unlimited gives freedom to explore over 1 million Kindle books, magazines, and comics
Kindle Unlimited digital subscription gives gives access to over 1 million Kindle books, magazines, comics, and audiobook companions.

Amazon no longer provides the exact number of items in specific categories or on search results pages. However, comparing the catalogs of eligible books is quite easy.

Kindle Unlimited catalog includes over 1 million titles – it’s what Amazon claims on the sign-up page. The last time we could track the exact number (the end of 2017), more than 1.4 million items were Kindle Unlimited eligible. It’s about one-fourth of the entire Kindle Store.

Amazon Prime Reading catalog includes about 1 thousand titles. The number of eligible books seems pretty limited, but you have to keep in mind two things:

  • The list of titles is rotating
  • You can use other services included in Prime membership

Every month, new titles are added to Prime Reading – and some titles are gone. The mechanism is the same as, for instance, in Netflix. It’s worth checking out the list of eligible titles once a month to spot the newcomers.

The second thing is more important. When you are a Prime member, you can access digital books via a few services:

  • Prime Reading
  • Kindle Owners’ Lending Library (the service seems to have been discontinued, though)
  • Kindle First,
  • Audible Channels

Content details

Both services give access to similar digital content, when it comes to format and nature:

  • Kindle ebooks – some of them are in Kindle in Motion format enabling you to play embedded video, audio, or interactive elements
  • Audiobook companions – you can add an audio track, powered by Audible, to eligible books to be able to seamlessly switch between reading and listening
  • Digital magazines
  • Comic books

Both services include the same content. In other words, you won’t find in Prime Reading what’s not included in Kindle Unlimited.

The content in both services has major characteristics:

  • The majority of titles is exclusive to Kindle Store – these books are self-published via Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing platform or released by Amazon’s own imprints, such as Montlake, AmazonCrossing, Thomas & Mercer, or 47North
  • There are almost no books from big publishers – if you are looking for bestsellers from Random House or Simon & Schuster, you’ll be disappointed to discover most of them are not included, although you can buy them in the Kindle Store
  • A regular price of a majority of books is less than $5 – it’s good to keep it in mind when evaluating whether it pays to join each service. As the books are released in the Amazon ecosystem, their prices are much lower than bestsellers from Big 5 publishers. Regular prices of these books are usually $3.99, $4.99, or $5.99.

Eligible devices and apps

Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading books availability
Both Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading books can be accessed from Kindle e-readers, Fire tablets, as well as Kindle apps for iPad/iPhone and Android.

Both services can be accessed from:

  • Kindle e-reader
  • Fire tablet
  • Kindle reading app for iOS and iPadOS (iPhone and iPad)
  • Kindle reading app for Android

If you use other devices, you can browse the catalog of each service in your web browser and add your books to the device this way.

Note: You won’t be able to read magazines from the Prime Reading catalog on Kindle Cloud Reader, Kindle for Mac, and Kindle for PC.

Borrowing and returning books

If you have the Kindle e-reader or Fire tablet, you can access catalogs of both services directly and borrow eligible books seamlessly.

You can do the same using your Kindle app for iOS or Android.

In both services, there are no due dates, so you can keep the downloaded titles as long as you want.

What you need to know is that you can keep up to 10 books from each service on your connected devices or apps. If you want to borrow the 11th title, you’ll need to return one of the previously downloaded books.

Cancellation terms

In both services, when you cancel the subscription, you’ll keep the borrowed books until the next billing date.

The day after the end of the subscription, the borrowed books will be removed from your device or app the moment you connect it to the web.

You will, however, keep all the notes and highlights you’ve made. You will be able to access them online at kindle.amazon.com.

Price comparison

As we’ve already mentioned, comparing Kindle Unlimited with Amazon Prime is of no use, as the latter service gives many other benefits – and most of them are not related to reading.

However, let’s quickly go through fee structures to let you have an idea of how much each service will cost you.

Kindle Unlimited

The most common subscription plan of Kindle Unlimited is a monthly fee, which is $9.99. Your subscription will be automatically renewed each month until you cancel it.

If you subscribe to the service for the first time, you are eligible for a 30-day free trial, after which you’ll start paying the monthly fee.

If you cancel your subscription during the free trial, your credit card won’t be charged.

Amazon Prime

You can select from two subscription plans:

  • Monthly plan – $12.99
  • Annual plan – $119

If you pick up the annual subscription, the monthly cost will be lower: $9.92 compared to $12.99 from a monthly plan.

However, if you would like to cancel your annual plan after, let’s say, two months, you won’t get an automatic refund for the remaining period. Please keep it in mind when selecting the subscription plan.

Available deals

Amazon offers several deals throughout the year for Kindle Unlimited, and almost none for Amazon Prime.

Therefore, you can only save money on Kindle Unlimited subscription. Usually, the deals are offered for Prime Day and Black Friday & Cyber Monday. Plus, there are a few less attractive deals in the meantime.

The usual deal for Kindle Unlimited is based on longer-time subscription plans. For instance, you can save:

  • 25% on 6-month subscription – $44.95 $59.94
  • 33% on 12-month subscription – $80.32 $119.88
  • 40% on 24-month subscription – $143.85 $239.76

Some Kindle Unlimited deals will let you save even 96%, for instance, when the 3-month subscription is offered for only $0.99.

Some time ago, Amazon introduced also Kindle Unlimited extend plans that are addressed to active members. You can buy one of the long-term plans and save roughly between 20 and 40%.

When is the best time to join Kindle Unlimited? If you are not eligible for the free trial anymore, you should hunt for deals. The best deals are offered for Black Friday & Cyber Monday.

When is the best time to join Amazon Prime? It’s a few weeks before Prime Day, and a few weeks before Black Friday. You will be able to test most features during the upcoming event, while still enjoying the 30-day free trial.

Which service is better for me?

The difference between the two services is clear:

  • Kindle Unlimited is for avid readers
  • Amazon Prime Reading is for occasional readers

If you want to read the hottest new bestsellers released by big publishers frequently, none of these services will meet your needs.

Before joining Kindle Unlimited or Amazon Prime, make sure to explore catalogs of eligible books to find out how many books you’d want to read. You can do it without being subscribed. Simply, use the web browser on your computer:
