The app that started a new chapter in reading experience, has won the award for the best communication design / Screenshot: Bionic Reading

The company that started a new era of reading experience, has won the international design award in the category Apps for Excellent Communications Design.

Have you tried bionic reading already?

Bionic reading is a free tool that brings an enhanced reading experience to your current e-reading device or app. How does it work?

Some parts of the words are displayed in bold text. As a result, you will be able to read faster and understand more.

The software is developed by the startup company Bionic Reading GmbH. The tool comes with an API, so that developers could create dedicated bionic apps and extensions.

The official Bionic Reading app is available for iPhone & iPad and Android. Currently, it’s free to use, but soon the company will offer a possibility to upgrade.

There are also dedicated apps for Mac and Windows. You can try bionic reading right in your browser, by going to the Bionic Reading web app

Most importantly, you can add bionic-formatted books to your reading app, for instance Amazon Kindle. All you have to do is open the Bionic Reading web app, add an ebook file (epub is now also accepted by Amazon), wait for a conversion, and add a converted file to the reading app of your choice.

The company that develops the Bionic Reading ecosystem has been awarded at the German Design Award 2023. It won in the category Apps for Excellent Communications Design.

Here is an excerpt from a jury announcement:

A fascinating tool that not only saves a lot of time, but also impressively shows what our brain is capable of.

Download these free apps to read Kindle books anywhere https://ebookfriendly.com/download-these-free-apps-to-read-kindle-books-anywhere/ https://ebookfriendly.com/download-these-free-apps-to-read-kindle-books-anywhere/#comments Wed, 17 Feb 2021 14:31:00 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=133546 Kindle apps are available for Android, iOS, Mac, PC, and web. Thanks to that, you can read your Kindle ebooks on literally any device. There is no need to transfer or convert the files.

It’s amazing how many people still want to manage content on their tablets or smartphones using file managers. In the end, they will have to pick up the right app to open the file.

Several users, who were planning to buy an iPad, asked us for tips to export ebooks from the Kindle. They imagined they would need to back up their books, imports them, and maybe – somewhere in the meantime – convert them to a different format.

There is no need to export or back up the files. There is no need to use file converters. The only thing to do to get Kindle books to your new device is download the free Kindle app.

What if most of your ebooks were downloaded for free from the sites that offer free public domain ebooks? You don’t need the Kindle app to be able to read them. You can pick up any other app that supports the same file formats as the Kindle – mobi or prc.

The problem begins the moment you want to read books you’ve bought in the Kindle Store. You will need to remove DRM. For most users, it’s a painful and frustrating process. Why do that, if you can manage all the books you’ve previously used on the Kindle, with the dedicated, feature-rich Kindle app?

Benefits of using Kindle apps

  • All your books are synced. No matter which device you open the book in, you will land exactly at the place where you have finished reading it.
  • There is no need to transfer files every time you change the device. All you have to do is download the Kindle app and sign in using the same Amazon credentials.
  • You can access your Kindle books even if you don’t have access to your own device. Thanks to a web app, you can login to your Kindle library using the web browser. Try read.amazon.com.
  • You have easy access to all your notes and bookmarks. You can do it from any computer by visiting read.amazon.com/notebook.

If you would like to back up all your Kindle books to your computer, that’s a different story. You can do that, and here is the guide.

Free Kindle apps to download

1. Kindle for Android

Free Kindle apps to download - Amazon Kindle for Android
Download the free Kindle app on your Android tablet or smartphone to get instant access to all your Kindle books / Screenshots: Google Play Store

The default book-reading app of the Android system is Google Play Books. Why should you download another app? It’s because Google’s book app can’t read your Kindle books. Well, it may – after you go through the painful process of stripping DRM and converting the Kindle file to the format supported by Google app.

It’s much easier to download the Kindle app from Google Play Store and sign in with your Amazon credentials. Once you do it, you will find your Kindle books under “All” tab – simple as that.

Amazon Kindle is one of the most advanced book-reading apps in the Google Play Store. It offers features you may have known from Amazon Fire or Kindle: built-in dictionary, Google search, Wikipedia, or instant translations. You will make use of X-Ray, Page Flip, or advanced library management.

The app seamlessly connects with the Kindle Store. You can download free samples or buy books right within the app. You can also download and manage free ebooks. They come from three sources:

  • Kindle Store – thousands of classic books from the public domain – however, the selection is not that large as on Project Gutenberg.
  • Library books – borrow ebooks from your local library and they will be delivered wirelessly to your Kindle account.
  • Free ebooks via your Amazon membership – if you are subscribed to Kindle Unlimited or Amazon Prime, you can access and download eligible books for free.

The Kindle app lets you read Print Replica textbooks. These special Kindle books offer rich formatting and layout similar to their related print editions. They also provide features to help you study smarter and quicker – you can highlight passages, add margin notes, search for keywords, etc.

One of the best features the Android Kindle app offers is Whispersync for Voice. This advanced technology lets you seamlessly switch between reading a Kindle ebook and listening to its audiobook companion.

2. Kindle for iPad and iPhone

A free Amazon Kindle app for iOS is the easiest way to bring your Kindle books to iPad and iPhone
A free Amazon Kindle app for iOS is the easiest way to bring your Kindle books to iPad and iPhone / Screenshots: App Store

Do you ask yourself a question “Can I read my Kindle books on the iPad or iPhone?”

The answer is, certainly, “yes.” Download the free Kindle app from the App Store and sign in with the credentials you use for your Kindle e-reader or Amazon Fire tablet.

Congratulations! You’ve just brought all your Kindle books to the iPad! The books are available in the Kindle app home view, under “All” tab. Tap the book you want to read, and the download will start automatically.

Since late 2017, Kindle apps for Android and iOS offer unified interface and features. You will appreciate it when you decide to switch from Android-powered device to iOS – or the other way round. When you start using the new device, you will be happy to see the familiar Kindle environment and the similar bunch of benefits.

However, compared to the Android app, Kindle for iOS lacks one major feature: you can’t buy books inside the app. It’s due to Apple’s restrictive policy, which made Amazon delete an in-app purchase option long time ago. Within the app, you will be only able to download free samples or access free books from Kindle Unlimited or Amazon Prime Reading.

What if you want to buy the Kindle book? You can still do it on your iPad or iPhone, but you have to use Safari browser for it. When you complete the order and switch back to the Kindle app, the book should have been already downloaded.

3. Kindle for Samsung

Kindle for Samsung is a "made for Samsung" reading app
Kindle for Samsung is a “made for Samsung” reading app that will let you download one free Kindle book per month. It’s compatible with many Samsung Galaxy models / Screenshots: Samsung

The app was introduced in 2014 as a replacement for Samsung’s own reading solution called “Reader’s Hub.”

It’s one of the apps that are “made for Samsung” and is available on a number of Galaxy devices. You will find the updated list here: Kindle for Samsung – compatible tablets and smartphones.

Kindle for Samsung is in fact Kindle for Android stripped from a few advanced features. However, it offers one big benefit – a monthly deal. Each month, four new books are offered. You can download one of them free of charge. In other words, using Kindle for Samsung will help you get 12 free Kindle books every year.

What you have to keep in mind is that Kindle for Samsung is different from Kindle for Android. The latter one is available in the Google Play Store on your Samsung device – but it doesn’t offer one free book per month.

You have to download Kindle for Samsung separately and use your Samsung login to activate it. The app, just like others made for Samsung, can be installed via Galaxy Apps widget that you have to download and install on your Samsung Galaxy’s home screen.

4. Kindle for Mac

The free Kindle app for Apple Mac computers
Kindle for Mac is great for studying. You can highlight text passages, make notes, and easily export them to a file / Screenshot: Mac App Store

It’s hard to imagine reading novels on a computer – unless you have to write an essay about them.

Kindle for Mac is a logical and helpful extension of the Kindle ecosystem. It’s a great solution for students, library patrons, or anyone who needs to learn using Kindle books.

The app offers most benefits of the mobile apps: X-Ray, Whispersync, Print Replica, or flashcards. You can highlight passages of text, and comfortably write down the notes.

Most importantly, you can access the notes instantly in the notebook on the right side, and download these notes to the computer. They will be saved as an html document from which you can paste the text to your note taking app or text editor.

5. Kindle for PC

Kindle for PC application
Download Kindle app to bring your Kindle books to the PC computer / Screenshot: Good E-reader

Kindle for PC is a helpful solution for anyone who needs to access Kindle books to study.

You can make highlights in multiple colors, write down notes, or bookmark pages, and everything will be synced across all devices that are linked to your Amazon account.

Just like Kindle for Mac, the app features two-column mode, and you can personalize its look to match your reading preferences. You can select font face, background color, margins, or line height, among other settings.

Currently, the app is available only to customers located in the United States. Supported operating systems are: Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7.

6. Kindle for Web

Kindle for the Web lets you access Kindle books from a web browser
Kindle Cloud Reader lets you access Kindle books from a web browser, such as Chrome, Safari, or Firefox / Screenshot shows the inside of Practice Makes Perfect English Sentence Builder by Ed Swick

Better known as “Kindle Cloud Reader,” it’s a web-based application you can use to access your Kindle from any computer. All you need is a browser, such as Chrome, Safari, or Firefox.

Open the browser, type read.amazon.com in the address bar, and sign in with your Amazon credentials. If you do not use your own computer (for instance, if you are in a library), make sure not to save your login credentials and log out after you finish.

The app will ask you to enable offline reading – you don’t have to accept it to access your Kindle library.

Kindle for Web is a simple and straightforward app but has everything you need to study: you can highlight the text, write down a note, or use a dictionary.

Can you copy the text from Kindle for Web and paste it in another tab of the web browser or a note taking app? It seems like a doable thing – but it’s not. The common copy-paste feature is disabled in the Kindle Cloud Reader. Once you select the text, you can either highlight it or make a note.

The good news is that all your notes are immediately added to your Kindle history, and you can access them immediately, also in the browser, by opening read.amazon.com/notebook in another tab. From here, you can copy the text wherever you want.

With Bookly, you’ll be able to keep track of all your books, rate them, set reading goals, and more.

If you’re just getting into the habit of reading, chances are you sometimes find it hard to keep yourself motivated and stick to a routine.

On the other hand, if you’re an avid reader, you might be in desperate need of a good app that would keep up with your readathons. Well, your prayers have been answered – with Bookly, you’ll be able to do all that (and even more).

Bookly is a bit like a mix between a workout-tracking app and Goodreads – it records the time spent while reading, analyzes it, and gives away suggestions on how to improve your reading routine, keeping you motivated all the way through.

How Bookly works

Whenever you start a new book, you can add it by scanning the ISBN code or finding it via the app’s database.

Then, you’re good to go – all you have to do is start a timer every time you read with a simple tap, and Bookly will record and analyze your reading progress over time.

While reading, you can also add quotes and thoughts about the book, set a countdown, or even play relaxing ambient sounds (such as light rain, flowing river, crowded café, and more) to help you focus on reading even better.

After you’re done reading for the day, you can simply press “Stop” and enter the number of pages (or, if reading an ebook, the %) you got to, and Bookly will accumulate the data over time, analyzing your reading habits, speed and progress.

If you’re just getting into the habit of reading, there’s also a number of features to keep you motivated – you can set reading goals and reminders to maintain your reading routine, receive personalized tips on how to improve reading skills, or make reading even more fun with game-like features like levels, rewards and achievements.

The app also automatically generates a neat infographic with all the reading stats for each book you complete, perfect to share on social media.

What’s even more, Bookly also lets you mark a book as lent or borrowed – so that you never lose a book to a forgetful bookish friend again.

How to add large files to Kindle and Kindle apps for iOS, Android https://ebookfriendly.com/add-large-files-kindle-guide/ https://ebookfriendly.com/add-large-files-kindle-guide/#comments Mon, 16 Nov 2020 07:30:00 +0000 http://ebookfriendly.com/?p=116569 In the simple guide below, you’ll learn about different ways of sending a large personal document to your Kindle e-reader or application.

The easiest way to add a personal file to the Kindle account is to email it as an attachment to the email address associated with your Kindle device or app.

There is, however, one factor that makes it impossible. It’s the file size limit.

The size limit of the file emailed to Kindle is being caused by two factors:

  • attachment size limit of your email provider – for instance, for Gmail the limit is 25 MB,
  • size limit on the Amazon side – Amazon won’t accept personal files bigger than 50 MB.

There is a growing number of ebooks that are packed with pictures and multimedia, and therefore are much larger than 50 MB. Cookbooks, picture books or graphic novels are making their way to e-readers and book reading apps. And, of course, Kindle Store is not the only source of them.

More and more ebook vendors offer books in mobi – the file format supported by Kindle.

Even if ebook platforms provide the function to send the purchased file to the Kindle automatically, it won’t happen in the case of ebooks exceeding the accepted size of the outgoing email.

How to send large files to the Kindle or Kindle application? Luckily, there is more than one way of doing it. You can pick up the one that suits you most.

There is one more thing you have to keep in mind. The 50 MB is the maximum size of the personal file that will be added to your Kindle cloud library.

Kindle cloud library is the archive of all your books you ever purchased in the Kindle Store or sideloaded. The books are available to download to any of the connected Kindle devices or apps and their content can be synced.

Any file larger than 50 MB can be added directly to the Kindle e-reader or Kindle app, but can’t be backed to Kindle cloud library, and therefore you won’t access it from any other device.

There is another way to cope with the problem. The solution is to reduce the size of the file. We won’t deal with it right now, but, in short, you can use Calibre ebook management software to strip images from the file.

If you have questions regarding the solutions we shared, please do not hesitate to ask.

Add large ebooks to Kindle or Kindle app

How to add large files to Kindle e-reader

If you want to add the large personal document directly to your Kindle e-reader, you can do it in two ways.

1. Transfer files via USB cable

This solution lets add ebooks that are larger than 50 MB. It’s convenient when you want to add multiple files at once. You can use it both on a PC and Mac computer.

1. Connect your Kindle to the computer

Use the cable that came with your Kindle, to connect the e-reader to the USB port of your computer. The Kindle should be visible as an external disc.

2. Copy the files to the Kindle

Click on a Kindle disc image. Inside, you’ll see the folder named “documents.” Copy the file or files onto it.

2. Use Send to Kindle app on your computer

This solution lets add multiple personal documents to your Kindle account, but you can only send files no bigger than 50 MB.

If you plan to add to your Kindle library a lot of third-party files, the Send to Kindle app is the most convenient way. Besides adding many files at once, it lets you select several Kindle devices or apps, as well as archive the documents in your Kindle cloud library.

1. Open the Send to Kindle app on your computer

If you still don’t have the Send to Kindle app, you can download it from Amazon. It’s available both for PC or Mac computers.

3. Add files to Send to Kindle app

You can add files in three ways:

  • drag and drop files to the Send to Kindle application,
  • use the Print menu in any application that can print,
  • control-click (Mac) or right-click (PC) on the document or documents.

Below, you can see how to add the file to the Send to Kindle app on a Mac computer.

Add large files to Kindle e reader - use the Send to Kindle application

Drag the file anywhere inside the Send to Kindle window. In the bottom part, you’ll find the list of all devices that are connected to your Kindle account. Select your Kindle e-reader.

If you also want the file to be immediately backed up in the Kindle cloud library, check the box “Archive documents in your Kindle Library.”

How to add large files to Kindle for iOS app

If you own iPhone or iPad, you can add the file to Kindle for iOS application in three ways.

1. Use a cloud storage app such as Dropbox

The solution works for files larger than 50 MB. I’ve tested it on a book that is 70 MB. You’ll be adding the books one by one. If you want to add files in bulk, please use two other methods.

I’ll guide you how to use Dropbox, but you can also successfully use Google Drive or any other cloud storage service.

If you don’t have Dropbox, you’ll need to sign up to the service first.

1. Download the book to your PC/Mac computer

If you’ve bought the book in the third-party ebookstore or found the book in one of the sites that offer free public domain ebooks, make sure to download the file in mobi format.

From here, upload the file to your Dropbox account. You can do it via the web browser or the Dropbox desktop application.

2. Use Dropbox app on the iPhone/iPad to open the file

If you don’t have Dropbox app, you can download it from the App Store.

When you open Dropbox, locate the file and tap it (image below, on the left).

Wait a bit until Dropbox processes the file. The message “No Preview Available” will appear. Tap the three-dot icon in the top right corner (image below, middle).

In the drop-down menu, tap “Export” (image below, right).

Adding large file to Kindle iOS using Dropbox app

A sharing menu will open. Tap “Open in…” icon in the lower row (image below, left).

Then, tap “Copy to Kindle” icon in the upper row (image below, right). If you don’t see this icon in the row, tap the “More” icon in the same row, and make sure to enable the Kindle sharing menu feature.

Use share menu to add a large file to the Kindle for iOS app

Kindle for iOS app will open and load the file you’ve just added. It may take a while, depending on the size of the document you wanted to sideload to your Kindle for iOS app.

2. Use iTunes app on a computer

This solution also works for files that are larger than 50 MB. You will be able to add multiple files at once.

The guide shows how to connect iPhone or iPad to a Mac computer, but you can also do it on a PC computer, using iTunes for Windows application.

1. Connect your iPad or iPhone to the computer

Use the USB cable to connect your iOS device to the computer. Open iTunes app if it doesn’t start automatically.

When your device successfully connects to the computer, its icon will appear in the top left corner of the iTunes app.

2. Copy the file to the relevant folder in iTunes

To find the folder holding the files from the Kindle for iOS app, click “Apps” in the sidebar on the left (see picture below).

On the right side, you’ll see “Apps” section. Scroll down to reveal “File Sharing” section. Underneath, you’ll find the list of apps. Select Kindle.

To the right, you’ll see the files that rest inside Kindle for iOS app (see image below).

Add large files to Kindle for iOS - locate folder in iTunes app

Now, the only thing is to drag the file from the desktop to the field underneath “Kindle Documents” and drop it there (see image below).

Add large files to Kindle for iOS - drag the file to iTunes app

Wait for the upload to finish, click “Done” and disconnect the iPhone/iPad from the computer.

Drag the file anywhere inside the Send to Kindle window. In the bottom part, there are listed all devices that are connected to your Kindle account. Select your iOS device and any other you want.

If you also want the file to be immediately backed up in the Kindle cloud library, check the box “Archive documents in your Kindle Library.”

How to add large files to Kindle for Android app

You can sideload large ebooks to your Android smartphone or tablet in two ways.

1. Use a cloud storage app such as Dropbox

The solution works for files larger than 50 MB. I’ve tested it on a book that is 70 MB. You’ll be adding the books one by one. If you want to add files in bulk, please use two other methods.

2. Use Dropbox app on Android device to open the file

If you don’t have Dropbox app, you can download it from the Google Play Store.

When you open Dropbox, locate the file. Tap options icon (see image below, on the left).

The menu will slide up from the bottom. Tap “Open with…” option, and select Kindle.

Add large files to Kindle for Android - use Dropbox app

Sometimes, you may get a message saying that there is no app capable of opening the file. You can alternatively select from the menu not “Open with…” but “Export” option. Then select “Send to Kindle.” This option, however, will let you add files that are smaller than 50 MB.

2. Use Send to Kindle app on your computer

This solution lets add multiple personal documents to your Kindle account, but you can only send files no bigger than 50 MB.

Google brings audiobooks to Android, iOS, Google Home, and online https://ebookfriendly.com/google-audiobooks-play-store-launch/ https://ebookfriendly.com/google-audiobooks-play-store-launch/#comments Wed, 24 Jan 2018 12:24:44 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=127192 Audiobooks are now available in Google Play Store for users of Android and iOS devices, as well as Google Home speakers and online

Audiobooks from Google Play Store can be played without subscription on Android and iOS devices, as well as online by users from 45 countries.

Audiobooks are on the rise, enjoying double-digit growth in the US and other markets.

See also:
[ef-archive number=2 tag=”lists” ]

Therefore, it may come as a surprise, that so far they were not offered in Google Play Store. Until now.

Google has just announced that audiobooks are rolling out in 45 countries, and are available in 9 languages (English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, Russian, Korean, and Japanese).

The launch of Google Play Store audiobooks is accompanied by a special promotion. Users in some markets may see the banner offering the 50% price reduction on the first audiobook they buy.

The most significant benefit of the new service is accessibility. No special app is required to listen to audiobooks bought in the Google Play Store. You can play them on a large variety of devices: Android, iOS, Google Home smart speakers, and even in a web browser on your old computer.

Google Play Books apps for Android and iOS have just been updated to include audiobook playback support. Apps for both platforms can now handle ebooks, textbooks, comic books, and audiobooks – even if you are offline.

What’s more, Google claims that the audiobook playback is synced between the devices linked to your Google account. It means that if you start playing an audiobook on the Google Home speaker, you can pick it up on your iPhone later and it will start playing at the same location where you left off.

The second big thing about Google audiobooks is they are offered without the subscription. Opposite to Audible, which aggressively prompts users to register for a monthly subscription, Google – at least for now – offers audiobooks in a traditional sales model.

Another thing worth checking out (and you can do it right now if you read this post on your computer) is the ability to listen to an audiobook online, without installing any special application. Your web browser is everything you need.

You can test how Google handles audiobooks by adding a free audiobook to your Google account and playing it online or in the Google Play Books app on your smartphone.

The free audiobook to test is Mindfulness by Mark Williams and Danny Penman. Make sure to play it on more than one device. You’ll see how unified and seamless the experience is.

A great feature of Google audiobooks ecosystem is the ability to choose the reading speed – from 0.75 to 2x. You can also quickly rewind the track 30 seconds backward and forward. For the time being, nothing like Amazon’s Whispersync for Voice is being offered. Whispersync for Voice is a killer feature that enables the user to seamlessly switch between reading an ebook and listening to an audiobook.

Google Play Store offers a large variety of digital content. You can download apps, movies, books, games, magazines, and newspapers. Currently, in the Books section, there are over 5 millions ebooks, comic books, textbooks – and now audiobooks.

New Kindle apps for Android and iOS are all about the look https://ebookfriendly.com/new-kindle-apps-android-iphone-ipad-look-themes/ https://ebookfriendly.com/new-kindle-apps-android-iphone-ipad-look-themes/#respond Tue, 24 Oct 2017 17:01:36 +0000 https://ebookfriendly.com/?p=125323 All-new Kindle applications for iPad, iPhone, and Android devices

Amazon is releasing revamped mobile Kindle apps that feature Gooodreads integration, themes, and better library navigation.

It’s been a long time since Kindle apps for major mobile operating systems – Android and iOS – have been thoroughly refreshed. Until now.

Amazon has just announced an “all-new Kindle app that makes it easier than ever to turn your phone or tablet into a book.” Have you noticed that it’s singular, although we are talking about apps for two different platforms?

It’s because the look of the Kindle apps is unified across these two platforms. In fact, when you take a closer look at the screenshots in the Google Play and Apple’s App Store, you will realize they are the same.

The apps look like being completely refreshed, but the feeling comes from the fact that most changes were made in design elements. The first visible thing is a new – and in my opinion much better – app logo.

When you open the app, you’ll see that many improvements were made to help users find own books or discover new ones more easily. Most changed were made to the Home View. Interface elements in the Book View hardly improved.

The new navigation bar at the bottom highlights the book you are currently reading. Its cover is seen right in the center of the bar. Bigger book covers are something you will see more often in the new release of the apps.

On the left side of the navigation bar, besides Library, you will see Community section. Integrated with Goodreads, it will let you easily discover and discuss books with friends. Goodreads comes to Kindle app for iPhone and iPad for the first time.

The Discovery section is devoted to making you find and buy stuff. It’s the kind of a recommendation engine that’s heavily integrated with the Kindle Store – something you can see in Fire tablets.

Interesting thing is that the Discovery section on the iOS app looks like being designed to let you buy books. You can only, due to the lack of a real Kindle Store integration, download free samples.

The last thing is something that will make you enjoy playing with it for a while: themes. You can choose between Light and Dark look. You can change a theme in the Settings, in More section.

One thing to note about the themes. They are applied to the Home View and are not the same as the reading mode inside the book (White, Sepia, Black). Changing the app’s theme doesn’t change the reading mode.

In my honest opinion, the unified cross-platform look is the biggest improvement the new update brings. You may switch from the iPhone to the new Google Pixel smartphone. You may drop your Android-powered Galaxy Tab and fall in love with the iPad. And you will always find the familiar reading interface of the Kindle app.

Are you enjoying the new app on your Android-powered machine? Do you like the new look and Goodreads integration on your iPad or iPhone?

Use Google Keep to collect and digitize quotes from print books https://ebookfriendly.com/google-keep-collect-digitize-quotes-print-books/ Thu, 01 Sep 2016 13:53:34 +0000 http://ebookfriendly.com/?p=115285 Grab image text in Google Keep

In this short post you’ll learn how to grab text from print books and make it editable using a free Google Keep app.

One of the biggest benefits of ebooks is that it’s easy to grab passages of text and make them available for further reference.

[ef-archive number=2 tag=”lists” ]

With only a bit more effort you can store your favorite passages from print books, as well. You don’t need to download any advanced application or sign up to another service.

All you have to do is to use a phone to take photos of favorite passages while you read the book. Then, you can use Google Keep app to do the magic for you.

Google Keep is a note-taking solution available for free for every user of Google services, such as Gmail or YouTube.

You can access Google Keep from your browser on a computer, but also via free mobile applications for iOS (iPhone and iPad), as well as Android.

One of the best features of Google Keep – essential in our case – is OCR, which stands for optical character recognition.

OCR is a technology that lets transform texts from images into a fully editable and searchable digital text. Thanks to that you don’t need to type manually the passages of text you want to keep for the future.

It can be particularly helpful when:

  • you want to save favorite quotes but don’t want to sacrifice the pleasure of reading paper books,
  • you study print books in a library, and don’t want (don’t have time) to make notes,
  • a digital version of a textbook is not available.

How to collect and digitize quotes from print books using Google Keep

Grabbing text with Google Keep is pretty easy. Let’s go through it and I’ll share a couple of tips.

1. Take a photo of a text

Take a photo of a text using Google Keep

There are two ways to do it:

  • you can use a phone’s built-in camera app, and then use a share menu to export images to Google Keep in bulk,
  • you can take a photo directly in Google Keep app, by picking a camera icon and making a photo note.

When you make a picture, you’ll obviously grab much more text than what you need. The easiest way to limit the number of lines is to position the phone horizontally and make a landscape photo. Below there is a photo opened in Google Keep app for iOS.

The text from the book is grabbed in Google Keep

I prefer shooting photos directly in Google Keep rather than by default camera. It’s the way to immediately manage the quote by tagging it.

Tagging is good if you want to collect book quotes in the same directory. For instance, it could be a general label such as “quotes,” but you can also use a tag specific for the single book you make notes from.

To tag a photo note in Google Keep, tap the dots icon in the bottom right corner, pick up Labels, and choose the relevant tag.

Tag the photo note in Google Keep

2. Digitize the text with Google Keep

Google Keep app for Android has the OCR feature, but the version for iOS does not. Anyway, I don’t think you’ll need to immediately turn the text to a digital version while reading a print book.

Once you store the picture on Google Keep, it will be accessible from the web as well, and it’s where you can also grab the text.

To do that, open Google Keep in a browser, find the note, open it, click on a “More Options” icon, and select the line saying “Grab image text,” as shown below.

Grab image text in Google Keep

After a moment the machine-encoded text appears under the photo.

The text is now searchable and editable in Google Keep

I wanted to grab the following text (copied directly from Google Keep, so that you can see how accurate the app is):

It’s difficult to say exactly what the people on the surface of the planet were doing now, because they didn’t really know what they were doing themselves.

• • •

Obviously, you can use Google Keep to manage any printed text, for instance:

  • collect passages from newspapers and magazines,
  • collect passages from digital books in which the option to highlight and manage text passages is not available,
  • grab text from image files such as jpg or png,
  • make business cards ready to add to contacts application,
  • digitize and organize printed correspondence for further reference,
  • grab text from bulletin boards, billboards, signs, etc.
  • make digital and searchable versions of printed instructions, guides, recipes, etc.

The text was grabbed from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: The Trilogy of Four by Douglas Adams, Picador, 2002.

Reading habits compared: Android vs iOS (infographic) https://ebookfriendly.com/reading-habits-android-ios-infographic/ https://ebookfriendly.com/reading-habits-android-ios-infographic/#respond Mon, 14 Jul 2014 13:30:00 +0000 http://ebookfriendly.com/?p=98267 Reading habits iOS vs Android

Oyster is an ebook ecosystem which for $9.95 a month gives their subscribers unlimited access to over 500,000 books.

Recently, the company has introduced a long-expected app for Android. This gave an opportunity to compare reading habits of users of  the two most popular mobile platforms. Oyster collected the facts in an interesting infographic.

Android readers are more likely to reach for health books, while iOS users prefer to read about how to influence people.

iOS readers read mostly before sleep, and during lunchtime. Android owners read in the evenings, and they tend to read long into the night.

As Digital Book World noticed:

Android Oyster users read a page every 20 seconds, versus 26 for iOS users. Android users also read for longer, averaging 8.5 minutes per session, versus 6.5 minutes per session for iOS users. Doing a bit of math, that means that Android users read about 25.5 pages per session and iOS users read about 15.

There are two ways to read ebooks on Samsung Galaxy Tab:

  • use the default application offered by Samsung,
  • pick up a book reading app from Google Play Store.

You can obviously rely on a preloaded solution. However, making some research will let you avoid some limitations and risks, especially having in mind the attitude Samsung had towards book apps in the past.

  • best book apps from Google Play Store,

  • and more.

1. Default e-reading solution – Kindle for Samsung

Since July 1, 2014, the default application for reading ebooks on all Samsung Galaxy Tab models is Kindle for Samsung.

In this post you’ll learn more about Kindle for Samsung. Below there are just the essentials to let you better judge the possibilities and risks.

Kindle for Samsung - reading in the cloud

To make the most of Kindle for Samsung, you’ll have to sign up not for one, but two services.

1. To use the application at all, you’ll have to sign up for Amazon. The app is powered by the Kindle ebook reading platform.

2. To use extra benefits, specific only to Samsung, you’ll also need to sign up for sign up for Samsung.

These extra benefits are Samsung Book Deals. Each month, four bestselling books enter the deal section, and when you use Kindle for Samsung, you’ll be eligible to download one of these books.

Kindle for Samsung - Book Deals sign up Kindle for Samsung - home page Kindle for Samsung - reading interface

Sounds cool enough? Wait. It’s not the end of the story. Relying too much on Samsung in the area of book reading at some point my get really disappointing.

Before Kindle for Samsung, the default ebook reading solution for Samsung Galaxy Tabs was Reader’s Hub.

Reader’s Hub had two major stages:

  • first generation – powered by Kobo ebookstore,
  • second generation – powered by Samsung.

As you see, Samsung is still looking for the best solution, and, unfortunately, this is happening at the expense of the users.

The company hasn’t offered any way to migrate books from Reader’s Hub 2.0 to Kindle for Samsung.

In other words, users had to do it themselves, by copying the files from the tablet, using Android file manager app. Then they had to convert these files from epub format to mobi format, if they wanted to open them in Kindle for Samsung.

What’s more, files, at least at the stage powered by Kobo, were protected with Adobe DRM. Users had to remove DRM from ebooks they owned, to be able to continue reading in a new default application.

If you hadn’t done it before July 1, 2014, your files were lost. It’s not a surprise that many users, especially those who picked Reader’s Hub, got extremely disappointed.

2. Backup – Kindle for Android

The good thing about Kindle for Samsung is that, in fact, you are not relying on Samsung, but on Amazon.

Even if you stop using the Samsung app, you can still access Kindle books on your Samsung Galaxy Tab. You can do it via Kindle app for Android, available for free from Google Play Store.

Kindle for Android

I called Kindle for Android a “backup”, but if you can live with Samsung Book Deals, the native Kindle app is far more advanced than Samsung.

The rule here is simple. If there is a new feature, and Amazon adds new things regularly, it will appear first of all in the native app.

Among many features, Kindle for Android supports Whispersync for Voice. Users can switch from reading a book to listening a corresponding audiobooks from Audible in just one tap.

What are the other benefits of Kindle ebook ecosystem? Here are just the few:

1. Kindle Daily Deal

Every day a set of ebooks gets a huge price drop. Usually the books cost from $1.99 to $2.99. Category deals include science-fiction, romance, teen, and children books.

However, do not expect biggest bestsellers. I could compare the attractiveness of Kindle Daily Deal to Samsung Deals.

2. Kindle Countdown Deals

This is an ongoing deal section of Amazon’s Kindle Store. You can find here several hundreds of discounted books, grouped by genres and/or authors.

3. Monthly Kindle Book Deals for $3.99 or Less

Every month, Amazon editors reveal a set of 100-500 books, and attract customers with lower price tags. The catalog of discounted books changes every month. Sets of ebook-audiobook are also included.

4. Kindle Ebook Exclusives

One of the most important benefits of using Kindle ebook ecosystem is the growing number of Kindle exclusive publications. That means they are not available in any other ebookstore.

The catalog of Kindle Ebook Exclusives is reaching 1 million. A good solution for readers, who like to explore books in specific categories.

For more reference, read facts and tips about Kindle Ebook Exclusives.

5. Kindle Unlimited

If you are an avid book reader, you’ll sooner or later consider signing up for ebook subscription service.

Kindle Unlimited, for $9.99 a month, is worth giving a try. It offers almost 900,000 books, most of them exclusive to Kindle Store. You can read them on your Kindle for Android app, but there is one limitation – you have to be a US resident.

The analysis of Kindle Unlimited ebook subscription will provide you with more information about the service.

3. Alternative book reading apps

Comparing Kindle for Samsung and Kindle for Android is a first step to adjust the e-reading experience for your personal needs.

I’ve tested many ebook reading apps on both Android and iOS, and one thing to note is, that in the end you will be using one app – the one suits you most – no matter how many of them you have on your Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Testing ebook reading apps is a big fun, but it also will give you a chance to recognize your own preferences.

Book apps on Google Play Store
There are plenty of book apps in Google Play Store

Why personal preferences are most important? One app may have a better user interface, the other one may be more stable. You may realize that there is nothing more important than accessing ebooks from the cloud. Or you may decide you want to be independent from ebook platforms like Kindle, Kobo, or Google Play Books.

Once you start the process, you can discover in the Google Play Store a plenty of great book reading applications. You can browse them in Book & Reference category.

There are two groups of Android book reading apps:

  • the ones connected with specific ebookstores: Kindle, Kobo, Oyster, Scribd, Nook, to name a few,
  • independent apps: you can download ebooks from different sources, but there is one condition – the books have to be DRM-free or compatible with Adobe DRM.

Most popular independent apps are:

Aldiko Samsung Galaxy Tab
Aldiko is one of the most popular apps in Google Play

No matter which book app you use, you can add your own titles to it. There are several ways to do it, usually using:

  • file manager,
  • the browser,
  • by sending a mail to yourself and opening it on a tablet,
  • Dropbox app, or any other app giving access to your cloud storage account.

4. Formats of ebook files

Most of book reading applications support modern ebook format called “epub” (Kobo, Google Play Books, Aldiko, FBReader).

The only exception is Kindle, which comes with a separate format, called mobi – and can’t read epub. This is why moving from Reader’s Hub to Kindle for Samsung was so painful. It had to include two steps: backing up the books, and converting them from one format to another.

If you want to have a freedom to read both epub and mobi ebooks, you should go for Moon+ Reader.

Moon Reader Samsung Galaxy Tab
Moon+ Reader offers a lot of customization options

File protection, called DRM (Digital Rights Management) is another thing to keep in mind. Most ebookstores use DRM, and that means the book purchased in one ecosystem can’t be easily read in the other one.

Luckily, Kobo and Nook ebookstores use the same DRM system, that requires to sign up for Adobe ID. Once you do it, and once you authorize your Samsung Galaxy Tab with the ID you got, you should be able to cross-read books from both ebookstores.

You can also collect all your epub books, including the ones from Adobe DRM-supported stores in a variety of other apps, naming only Aldiko, Mantano, or txtr.

Obviously, you can add pdf files to the e-reading app of your choice. While it’s fine on a big screen of 10.1 Galaxy Tab, you may find it hard to read pdf files on the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 3 (especially that is has a lower resolution than, for instance Galaxy Tab 4 7).

That’s why it’s good to make a decision to start collecting books in one of the modern formats, like epub or mobi, that let adjust font size and reflow text for maximum reading convenience.

4. Free ebooks for Samsung Galaxy Tab

When you download any book application from Google Play Store, it will most probably come with a few free books you can read right away.

Kobo, Kindle or Nook apps will force you to shop in their respective ebookstores. However, you can still add your own ebooks to any of these apps.

One thing to remember is the right format:

  • for Kindle – download files in mobi,
  • for Kobo, Nook, Google Play Books, and majority of other book apps – download files in epub.

There are two ways to find ebooks for your Samsung Galaxy Tab.

1. Download from sites that offer free ebooks

There is a growing number of sites that offer nothing more than ebooks that are free to download, and available in many ebook formats, including mobi and epub.

Project Gutenberg - front page
Project Gutenberg os one of the sites that offer classic novels for free

We have the detailed overview of the sites that offer free ebooks, so below there are just links to the recommended ones:

2. Search for free ebooks on Google web search

If you think that visiting one specific site can be limiting, you can always use Google web search.

All you have to do it to use special search operators, that will limit search results only to pages that are downloadable files in a specified format.

For instance, if you are looking for Sherlock Holmes for your Kindle app, use this search phrase:

Sherlock Holmes filetype:mobi

Using “mobi” instead of “filetype:mobi” is also accurate and can extend the list of relevant sites.

Another example. If you want to find Moby Dick for your Kobo applications, search for:

Moby Dick epub

5. Ebook management on Samsung Galaxy Tab

A tablet is more flexible than dedicated e-reader. On your Samsung Galaxy Tab you can buy and download books to different applications, and ebook platforms associated with them.

There is one case where you can find versatility of the tablet very helpful. It’s possible to use for instance Kindle, Nook, and Aldiko apps at the same time on one device.

The benefit of having hundreds of books at hand will sooner or later make you think of the best way to manage collected books.

There are two major ways to store the ebooks.

1. In the cloud

An app that requires registration usually offers a backup of your entire ebook library.

Your books are stored on the ebookstore’s server, and can be accessed any time, not only from the app on your Galaxy Tab, but also from a computer, or even a website.

Storing ebooks in the cloud brings one of the most useful benefits of ebooks: synchronization of your reading. You can end reading a book on your smartphone in a subway, and open it on a tablet in the evening – exactly on the same page.

What’s more, you can get synced not only the furthest read location, but also bookmarks, notes, and highlights.

Kindle, Nook, Kobo, or Google Play Books store your ebooks in the cloud.

Some apps limit full sync only to books purchased in their own ebookstores. That’s the case of Nook or Kobo. On the contrary, Kindle can also sync the side-loaded books.

2. On the device

Some users prefer to have a bigger control over an ebook collection, and want to physically store the files on the device they own.

In this case, picking up one of the independent book reading apps should solve the problem. There is one major disadvantage – you won’t get access to your ebooks if you can’t access your Galaxy Tab, and you’ll have to make a backup of all the files before buying the next

However, if you decide to go with Moon+ Reader app, mentioned above, you can sync ebooks via your Dropbox account.

Moon+ Reader offers sync via Dropbox

Each of the topics could be explained in more detail, but I wanted to keep this post short and simple, and not to overwhelm you with too much information.

To recap: try Kindle for Samsung. Compare it to Kindle for Android. Explore alternatives. Make a decision.

All three models have the same 1.2 GHz processor, 1.3MP front plus 3MP rear-facing camera, and 1.5GB RAM memory. Each model comes with over $300 of free content and services.

When it comes to the looks, the new lineup is sleeker than former generation and resembles Galaxy Note, 2014 edition. The shape is not curved any longer. Only the corners remain rounded.

While proportions are quite the same, the only visible reduction in size was achieved in the 7-inch model. It’s by 0.9 mm thinner than its predecessor.

Comparing the dimensions shows that most of the Tab 3 covers with elastic corner straps should work quite well with Tab 4 respective models. Sleeves and jackets made to fit Tab 3 models will fit Tab 4, that’s for sure.

However, no case that holds the device in place using the shell (any kind of shell, be it a plastic or leather one) will be fitting the new models. Please choose wisely when shopping – make sure you’ve added the right version of the case to your shopping cart.

They are unbranded, and that means you’ll be able to buy them for a lower – sometimes much lower – price.

Rakuten – while Amazon and eBay are obvious choices, there are also other sites to explore, if you still haven’t found the ideal case in ideal price. One of them is Rakuten. You’ll see here several Samsung Galaxy Tab case covers available in affordable prices.

Etsy – a top destination for vintage and handmade items, art, and supplies. If you’re looking for a sleeve rather than a smart cover, you’ll find a plenty of gorgeous designs to pick up.
