Is the new 7-inch $49.99 Fire tablet worth buying? Here is everything you need to know to make the right decision.

The newest 9th-generation Fire 7 tablet has just been announced and starts shipping on June 6, 2019 – exactly two years after the previous generation.

According to Amazon, the budget 7-inch Fire features twice the storage, faster processor, and hands-free Alexa. It sounds like a solid improvement, especially when combined with a new color range.

However, the new tablet still keeps a 4-year-old IPS display, which is not impressive. The performance upgrade will not be substantial with familiar quad-core 1.3 GHz processor.

The good news is a support for hands-free Alexa. An even better news would be to see Show Mode Charging Dock for the new Fire 7, but we will have to wait for it a bit longer.

The new device costs the same as the predecessor: $49.99 for the basic version with ads and 16 GB of internal memory. The most expensive version (32 GB on board, no special offers) costs $84.99.

The newest Fire 7 has exactly the same dimensions and shape as an earlier model. Locations of buttons, ports, mic, and camera are also the same. It means that all cases compatible with the previous model will also fit the new one. More and more third-party Fire 7 2019 cases are being released on Amazon as we speak.

Amazon’s new Fire 7-inch tablet may be quite disappointing for current users of the previous-generation model. It’s basically the same device, but with bigger storage options and ability to activate Alexa with just your voice.

However, if you are looking for a solid budget tablet for under $50, the newest Fire is still on top of the list.

Let’s quickly go through the list of main benefits.

1. Support for bigger microSD card

Just like any other Amazon tablet, the 2019 Fire has a microSD card slot. There is one big benefit of the new model, though. Opposite to other Fire models, you can use with it a card capable of holding up to 512 GB of data.

Other Fire tablet still support smaller microSD cards. HD 8 comes with 400 GB support, HD 10 – 256 GB. However, next-generation models (which will surely be launched this year) should feature support for 512 GB, as well.

2. Bigger storage

If you have invested in a microSD card, this feature is of little importance.

The new Fire 7 is available in two storage options: either 16 or 32 GB. The previous-generation model offered twice smaller memory (8 or 16 GB).

3. Better front camera

You can finally make video calls where you will actually see the face of the person on the other side of the line.

Amazon Fire 7 (2019) comes with the front camera with the same specification as the one on the back: 2.0 MP with 720p HD video recording.

As a reference, the previous-generation Fire 7 had the front camera with only 0.3 MP capture resolution.

4. Hands-free Alexa

Previous-generation Fire 7 supported Alexa voice assistant, but to activate it you had to take the tablet in your hands.

The newly released 7-inch Fire lets you speak to Alexa hands-free. You can leave the tablet on the other side of the room and activate it by simply saying “Alexa” and asking a question.

5. Shorter charge time

Most reviewers missed it, but I think it’s something worth highlighting. The new Fire can be fully charged 30% quicker than the previous model.

The 2017 7-inch Fire needed 6 hours to be fully recharged. The newest model charges to 100% in approximately 4 hours, if you use the micro-USB power adapter included in the box.

It has its price, though. The battery life is shorter – 7 hours of reading, browsing the web, watching video, and listening to music versus 8 hours in the previous-generation model.

6. Same dimensions – full case compatibility

The 2019 Fire 7 tablet has exactly the same dimensions and shape, as well as placement of ports, buttons, mic, and rear camera.

On one side, it makes it look like a “nothing new” kind of gadget (similarly to the 2019 iPad mini 5) – especially that the colors are less catchy than in the 2017 model.

It has, however, one big benefit. The case from your current Fire model should be 100% compatible with the new one.

It’s worth buying the newest Fire if you want to give it to another member of your family.

If you currently use the previous-generation 7-inch Fire, and bought is last year, you will hardly find any reason to replace one device with the other.

Also, if you were looking for a better user experience, the new Fire doesn’t give much. Amazon claims it’s faster, but processor specs are the same – so it’s not considerably faster.

The biggest disappointment is the same standard-definition display, which offers only 1024 × 600 pixels. It’s the same display as the one used in two previous Fire 7 generations.

If you are looking for a solid upgrade, you should take a closer look at Fire HD 8.
